Birth Control
Choosing the right birth control is a personal decision. Dr. Rodriguez and his team offer thorough consultations to help you find the method that fits your health, lifestyle, and family planning goals -- with no judgment, just expert guidance.
Why birth control counseling matters
With so many options available, choosing birth control can feel overwhelming. Effectiveness rates vary, side effects differ widely, and the best choice depends on your health, future pregnancy plans, and lifestyle. The team helps you work through these factors and find a solution that fits your life.
Types of birth control
Sterilization
Tubal ligation is a permanent, highly effective form of contraception performed as a minimally invasive outpatient procedure. The team only recommends sterilization for patients who are certain they have no future pregnancy plans.
Long-Acting Reversible Contraceptives (LARCs)
LARCs include intrauterine devices (IUDs) and implants. These are among the most effective forms of contraception available and are reversible. Once placed, they work for 3 to 10 years or until removed.
- Hormonal IUDs -- Release small amounts of progestin and often reduce or eliminate periods.
- Copper IUDs -- Hormone-free; effective for up to 10 years.
- Implant -- A small rod inserted under the skin of your upper arm; effective for up to 3 years.
Short-Acting Hormonal Methods
- Birth control pill -- Taken daily; available in combination and progestin-only formulations.
- Patch -- Worn on the skin and changed weekly.
- Shot (Depo-Provera) -- Administered by injection every three months.
Barrier Methods
Condoms, diaphragms, and the cervical cap prevent sperm from reaching an egg. Condoms are the only method that also protects against sexually transmitted infections.
Beyond pregnancy prevention
Hormonal birth control is also prescribed to manage painful or heavy periods, endometriosis, PCOS, and hormonal acne.
