What is a well-woman exam?

A well-woman exam is a comprehensive yearly visit dedicated entirely to your health. Unlike sick visits, this appointment is proactive -- it is your opportunity to screen for conditions before they become problems, ask questions about your body, and build a trusting relationship with your provider. The exam is tailored to where you are in life, whether you are a teenager attending your first visit, a woman in her childbearing years, or someone navigating menopause.

When should I start?

The first well-woman visit is recommended between ages 13 and 15. This early visit typically does not include a pelvic exam -- it is focused on building a relationship, discussing puberty and menstruation, and creating a safe space for questions. Pelvic exams and Pap smears generally begin at age 21, with annual visits recommended throughout adulthood.

What happens during the exam?

Your visit begins with a review of your medical history and vitals. This is a great time to raise concerns about symptoms, birth control, family planning, or menopause.

Pelvic exam and Pap smear

If you are due for one, the team performs a pelvic exam to evaluate your uterus and pelvic organs for fibroids or irregular tissue, and a Pap smear to screen for cervical cancer.

Breast exam

The team performs a clinical breast exam and may recommend further imaging such as a mammogram depending on your age and risk factors.

Health counseling

After the exam, your provider may make recommendations about diet, exercise, supplements, and lifestyle habits to support your overall health.
