What does pregnancy care include?
Comprehensive pregnancy care begins before you conceive -- with preconception counseling to prepare your body -- and continues through your prenatal visits, labor, delivery, and postpartum recovery. The team is with you at every stage.
Your prenatal visit schedule
- Weeks 4-28: Once per month
- Weeks 28-36: Every two weeks
- Weeks 36-40: Weekly
High-risk pregnancies are seen more frequently. High-risk situations include maternal age over 35, a pre-existing condition like diabetes, or pregnancy with multiples.
First prenatal visit
At your first visit, the team confirms your pregnancy, establishes your due date, performs a pelvic exam and blood work, and detects your baby's heartbeat. This is also a great time to ask about prenatal vitamins, diet, exercise, and medications.
Screenings throughout pregnancy
- Ultrasounds at multiple stages to monitor fetal growth and anatomy
- First and second trimester genetic screening
- Glucose tolerance test at 24-28 weeks for gestational diabetes
- Group B streptococcus (GBS) screening late in pregnancy
- Blood pressure monitoring at every visit
Postpartum care
The team supports you after delivery as your body heals. This includes a postpartum visit at 6 weeks to assess your physical recovery, discuss birth control, and screen for postpartum depression.
When to contact our office
If you think you might be pregnant, schedule an appointment as soon as possible -- early prenatal care gives you and your baby the best start. During pregnancy, call us right away if you experience bleeding, severe abdominal pain, significantly reduced fetal movement, or any symptom that concerns you.
